A five pins match in Biliardo Live: the green table with the pins in the middle, the cue ready to shoot and the scoreboard

The games

Four billiards games, nine ways to play

Biliardo Live brings together the billiards games people actually play in Italian bars and clubs, each with its official rules and its own scoreboard. Pick the game, the opponent and the target score, and break.

The five pins table with three balls and five pins standing in a cross

5 birilli Five pins, Italian billiards

  • Cue
  • 3 balls
  • 5 pins

The most played billiards game in Italy, and the heart of this Italian billiards game. The table has no pockets; on it are three balls — yours, your opponent’s and the small red ball — and five pins standing in a cross in the middle.

You never aim at the pins directly: you hit your opponent’s ball and send it, often off one or more cushions, into the pins or onto the red. A white pin is worth 2 points, the red centre pin 4, and 10 if it falls alone. Knock pins down with your own ball and the points go to your opponent. Players take one shot each, and the first to reach the target score wins.

The Goriziana table with blue tournament cloth and nine pins in the middle

Goriziana Nine pins

  • Cue
  • 3 balls
  • 9 pins

Same table and same three balls as five pins, but with nine pins in a Greek cross and much bigger scores: the outer pins are worth 2, the inner ones 8, the red centre pin 10 — and 30 if it falls alone. Touching the red ball scores 6.

The shot that changes everything is the indirect one: if your ball touches a cushion before anything else, pin and red-ball points count double. That is why Goriziana, online as in the club, is a game of cushion shots. Matches are usually played to 200 or 300.

Variants

  • Tutti doppi: every value doubled: inner pins 16, the centre pin alone 60, the red ball 12. Cushion-first shots get no extra bonus; matches go to 200, 400 or 600.
The boccette table in an old bar, with the small blue ball and the castle of pins

Boccette Played by hand

  • By hand
  • 4 balls each
  • 5 pins

No cue here: the balls are rolled or thrown by hand. Each player has four balls, white or red; on the table there is a small target ball, the pallino, and a castle of five pins.

A bit like bocce, at the end of each round the player with the balls nearest the pallino scores (1, 3, 5 or 8 points for one to four balls). Meanwhile you knock your opponent’s balls into the pins: side pin 2, centre pin 4, the centre alone 8, all doubled if your ball touches the far cushion first. Watch out for the friso: a ball you hit must not run straight into the pins. Choose spin, power and a rolling or lofted throw.

Variants

  • Boccette Goriziana: one ball each, thrown at a shared yellow ball, with Goriziana’s nine pins; an indirect throw doubles every point.
The carom table with the retro look of Biliardo 2: flat colours and chunky pixels

Carambola Carom billiards

  • Cue
  • 3 balls
  • No pins

The international game, with no pins and no pockets. Each player has a cue ball and must make it touch both other balls: every carom scores a point and lets you shoot again, until you miss.

Played with FIBiS and UMB rules, with a scoreboard that keeps innings, the current run and the general average, as in real competitions. If you want a three cushion billiards game that tests your geometry, this is the toughest challenge on the table.

Variants

  • Libera: straight rail: any carom counts; the corner zones stop runs that are too easy.
  • 1 sponda: one cushion: your ball must touch at least one cushion before the second ball.
  • 3 sponde: three cushion: at least three cushions before the second ball — the game of the great international tournaments.

A billiards simulator done properly

Play against the computer

Three opponents, three levels: Nino, the rookie; Beppe, the bar regular; Lo Squalo, the shark who never forgives a mistake. Or challenge a friend on the same device, one shot each.

Realistic physics

Spin, power and cue tilt work as on a real table: balls that curve, believable cushion bounces, pins that fall the way they should. You can even set the temperature of the cloth, which changes how far the balls run.

Six table ambients

Classic club, old bar, tournament, Halloween party, Christmas and a retro table with the look of Biliardo 2. New cloth, new rails, a whole new mood.
